The Submariner has gone many places as part of campaigns to explore and discover new places on Earth. In one expedition The Submariner held up to over one thousand dives. A well known anthropologist used a Submariner during
his 1970 journey. It was the watch Sean Connery wore as James Bond.

The original Submariner was certified for depths of 330 feet but the watch was later upgraded and was more waterproof and the insides were improved. In 2003, Rolex celebrated the Submariner’s 50th anniversary by launching the Rolex Submariner anniversary edition. Although it has the timeless Rolex look a green bezel and Maxi dial were aded. The Submariner is waterproof to a maximum depth of 300 meters/1000 ft. The Triplock system featuring a triple gasket system is identified by three dots on the crown it will then be able to tighten against the case tube as well as the Oyster case for a better seal. The case itself is made of 904L stainless, platinum or gold. 904L steel is a corrosion-resistant stainless steel alloy. Gold that is used in Rolex watches is made by Rolex to be used in their watches. This Rolex model has a one directional bezel that moves to make it easy to follow your dive time. Since the bezel only rotates counterclockwise the elapsed time can only become shorter in case of accidental bezel motion. The rotor that turns as you make movements is called Perpetual, and the movements are transferred to a spring where the energy is stored for those times that the watch is still, it can keep running up to three days. Every watch has a movement that has been certified by the COSC as a Swiss chronometer. The Rolex calendar advances itself very simply each midnight.

The Rolex Sea-Dweller,introduced in 1971,is a heavier-duty version of the Submariner in steel, with a thicker case and crystal. To this watch Rolex built in a helium escape valve for use in saturation diving. These watches are rated for dives as deep as 4000 feet.

 

Another part of the Rolex Submariner watch is the rotatable bezel. It helps divers accurately measure their time underwater. The Rotatable bezel is a feature that makes the Submariner first class on land, sea and underwater.

Another key feature is the trip lock winding crown, it has drawn inspiration from the submarine hatch and it possesses three layers so that no water can seep into the watch.

Rolex Submariner is totally a superior watch and to a pressure of 500 bars it is waterproof, setting a standard of its own. The casing in which this technically superior watch is placed is a wonder to admire; it is made of gold, platinum or high quality stainless steel. One oyster case undergoes more than 150 steps of manufacturing to get that sheen and that quality. A Rolex invention is the perpetual rotor which is the worlds’ first self winding mechanism. It gives you seamless movement, the energy which is generated is accumulated in the mainspring and depending on the model it gives varying hours of operation.

The Submariner is truly an amazing watch which has been available for decades, but it has never lost its elegance and skilled craftsmanship. Rolex has proved from time and again it is the worlds’ best time keeper.

The old Sea-Dweller as with many Rolex models is very traditional and understated in its design. The newer model is more out front with the Rolex logo. It is branded on the bezel and other places. One of the pleasing remainders is the lack of a magnifier for the date. Rolex all in all did a respectful job with the overall look.

The new Sea-Dweller like the Green Submariner and new Master II has the large dial features. Both the large and small hands are bigger as is the hour marks. I like these for a professional dive watch meant to be both used and viewed underwater.  Once again well done.

Even the idea that someone might dive deeper than the old rating of 4,000 feet is silly. To work to update that to 12,800 feet is ridiculous. However this is the way many watch companies are going in their desire to set themselves apart, so I applaud Rolex for going the full distance.

They have updated the flat sapphire crystal for one that is domed. And a very hard ceramic bezel that have digits which are filled with platinum.

An improved band closure that has smaller links.
There is a titanium alloy used in the caseback instead of the old stainless.  Larger case with slightly updating styling.
Added blue on the face and bezel dot — looks great.

The watch has been outfitted, as before, with a helium escape valve. This is not needed often but is essential for professional divers. The movement uses the new anti-magnetic spring as the Milgauss.

The new price was not yet available but I am sure it will remain a very expensive watch. It is always sold out and the new features will only increase it’s demand.

After so many years and decades of updating slowly it has been great to see Rolex revisit so many of their standards models recently. As much as I appreciate all the changes and added features I do hope that at some point Rolex takes a break to enjoy all their efforts. They could even find time to introduce a truly new Rolex model and design.
