How to Protect a Watch

June 7th, 2009

Plenty of us have to take care to protect a wrist or pocket watch from day to day wear. Pricey watches or family heirlooms have to be handled with care, and there are a lot of ways a watch can get messed up during the course of an average day, especially if you’re doing any kind of manual labor. Caring for a watch involves planning. Here are a few comprehensive tips for keeping your watch from damage or excessive wear.

  1. Step 1

Take off your watch for heavy lifting, factory work, or any “dirty jobs.” To protect your watch, this step is first and foremost in what you need to follow. Wrist watches that you wear during lifting or heavy labor can get scraped, muddied, or broken easily. Always be aware of what you’re doing while wearing your watch.

  2. Step 2

Keep your watch out of the water. This is another big commandment for protecting a watch. Unless it’s water resistant, a wrist or pocket watch will be easily destroyed by water. Even a lot of humidity can damage a watch, so for optimal care, keep it from sweating, raining or other humid conditions.

  3. Step 3

Wind your watch regularly. If it’s the old kind of watch that needs wound, establish a time for winding, this reduced general wear over time.

  4. Step 4

Be careful with parts. When winding or adjusting time, don’t pull too hard on the small knobs or parts of the watch. This is another common way a watch gets damaged. Treat the parts with care, and go easy on the strap or chain, too.

  5. Step 5

Follow your watch manual. The manual will give you detailed instructions for optimal care to make sure your watch is running for years.

  6. Step 6

Take the watch off at night. It seems rare, but watches can be damaged while you sleep. For best care, put your watch away in its case at night, and during your morning shower.
