Today, we bring you a treat. The beast in the flesh, the internet forum darling, the Citizen Ecozilla. The model for review is the BJ8040-01E, a large dive watch that makes you feel like an old-school diver from the minute it is strapped to your wrist. Lets review the stats:

• Dive watch rated to 300 meters (almost 1,000 feet).
• Titanium case.
• 6mm thick mineral crystal.
• Helium release valve.
• Uni-directional dive time bezel.
• 180 day power reserve.
• Citizen Eco-Drive solar quartz movement.

The Citizen Ecozilla (a nickname that combines the Eco-Drive name with an accurate poke at the watches gargantuan size) is a modern tool diver. Tool dive watches are not flashy, tech laden, or in any way concerned with the standard conventions of watch design. Tool divers are only concerned with being uncompromised dive watches. Citizen has created something of a frankenstein (in a good way) with this watch, mixing their highly successful Eco-Drive technology with the classic styling and build of a tool dive watch. The Ecozilla contrasts its large and unwieldy case with ultra light titanium, which makes the watch much more wearable then its looks alone would convey. I have to admit that I was not a fan of this watch from the moment I received it; it felt too big, clunky, and awkward (both physically and esthetically). That said, after giving the watch a few full days on my wrist, it grew on me in a profound way.

I want to resist any hyperbole when describing the size of the case. It is HUGE. It sits high on your wrist and if you have scrawny wrists like me, you will quickly get used to people commenting on the size of your watch. (See the included video and photos for a better view of the Ecozilla’s profile.) Putting the size aside, the fit and finish of the Ecozilla is great, and exactly in line with what we have come to expect from Citizen watches. The screw down crown is arguably the best I have ever used on a quartz watch. The tactile gnarled finish on the crown is matched with excellent threading and smooth action when screwing or unscrewing. The unidirectional bezel is easy to grip and smooth across its prominent “clicks.” Unfortunately, the crystal is mineral glass and not sapphire, though that does improve its shatter resistance. Being a tool diver, the crystal is 6mm thick to ensure water resistance and it flat mounted just below the bezel.

The best feature of the watch is its luminosity; Citizen was not messing around when they painted the hands and markers on the Ecozilla. The lume glows brightly and for an almost absurd amount of time. The only comparison that comes to mind is the Seiko SKX779 “Monster” which is generally the gold standard for affordable dive watch luminosity. The Ecozilla easily glowed through an entire movie or a long night drive and seems to charge its paint quickly under sunlight. Legibility is obviously a priority on this watch; the large hands and markers are great for quickly glancing at the time.

The rubber strap is basic and in no way noteworthy. It is integrated into the case which made fitted rubber feel too tight coming out of the case and required backing off the buckle and leaving a space between the bottom of my wrist and the buckle itself. The watch comes packaged with an additional length of rubber to accommodate wearing with a wetsuit. There is a bracelet option but only on the stainless steel model and I cannot imagine the bracelet is worth giving up on the ultra light titanium on a watch of this size. The watch ships in a zippered faux leather case — standard citizen fare. I’m not sure why Citizen designed the Ecozilla without standard lugs but adapters can be found online to incorporate any strap with the Ecozilla.

The Eco-Drive solar quartz movement is both rugged and totally transparent from a usage standpoint. Like any good quartz movement once the time is set, you just wait for the battery to eventually die. You’ll likely be waiting a long time as the Eco-Drive caliber in this watch is advertised as never needing a new battery. The Eco-Drive movement uses a solar cell in the dial to charge a battery that will power the movement for an entire 180 days. It is a great piece of technology that suits any watch and it is one of Citizens best innovations.

As a dive watch, the Citizen Ecozilla has its bases covered. It has a high resistance to water pressure, an extremely legible dial set, and accurate and simple movement, and very good build quality. It is easy to see how the Ecozilla (and its big brother the Autozilla — an automatic version) garner such a considerable following online. After wearing it for a couple of days I had grown to love the “submarine” style of the case, the large hands, and the purpose-built design. Tool dive watches are intrinsically cool because they are generally not very flashy, they are designed to be bulletproof, and apologize for nothing. The Citizen BJ8040-01E Ecozilla is a deep sea beast with the manners of a watch that you could wear daily. Priced at $595 and available online for less, if you are in the market for a large tool diver, I cannot imagine the Ecozilla ever letting you down.

The analog movement is quite basic, just hours/minutes/seconds, with quick-fading luminous paint. Note that the analog and quartz movements are separate, which is both a pro and a con: You can set different times for traveling, but on the other hand, its annoying if they drift apart.

The showcase of this watch is the e-ink display. As you can see from the pictures, it has incredibly high contrast, a 180 degree viewing angle and looks almost like newsprint. The blacks are speckled with white and vice-versa. It’s very easy on the eyes. The whole screen redraws for every update, which takes some getting used to as does the slow (one second) refresh (which is common to e-ink — even the Kindle).

I like the design of this watch. It has a clean, unfussy look of satin and polished finishes, and the non-tapering bracelet nicely balances the substantial heft of the watch. The crown is signed, and the two buttons control the digital display. The lugs curve down to meet the integrated bracelet.

The display is changed a bit from the predecessor Christian reviewed – the ‘E-ink’ logo has been removed and a bit of lume added.

The Ana-Digi is available on bracelet ($10 more, $195), leather or rubber strap ($185). Personally, I like leather, but you can choose and $10 is a very reasonable premium for the bracelet.

I’ve had a lot of fun wearing this one, changing the display modes and enjoying the novelty of the e-ink. It’s still not very readable after dark, though, since the lume fades quickly and there’s no illumination.

The lack of other features also makes this a bit less useful – no alarm, stopwatch, or timer. What it does have is that unique display, really.

Phosphor has also sent us their two latest digital-only watches – keep an eye out for those reviews hopefully this week. Those are a bit more innovative in form than the ana-digi. As is often the case, a new invention like e-ink first imitates the current system before being used to full advantage.

The P-0201 is described as “Digital Hour Clock Watch,” and the P-0302 is listed as “Digital Calendar Watch.” These are pretty accurate in describing their style differences. The 0201 is all about the time, with the numeric or nouveau hour-circle display of the current time. It also has glyphs for PM and “alarm on.” Functions include time mode, date display, alarm, and hour-circle mode. Seen above, this last one is the most striking, displaying hours as a notch in a ring with minutes below them. Striking, easy to read from across the room, and generally quite functional. As with every other e-ink watch, once a minute the entire display redraws itself in inverse, making for a dramatic and sometimes distracting display as the whole face redraws in white or black before adding the mode display. People will notice when you wear these!

The P-0201 review unit is the version on a rubber strap. It’s 24mm, non-tapering, dual-tang-buckle, and very comfortable. On the inside of the strap, the Phosphor name is printed: a decent way to provide grip and texture. On my 7.5″ wrist, the curvature of the watch is functional, low-profile, and sleek. The case has hooded lugs and straight spring bars which make for an integrated look I quite like. The sides of the case are polished, and the top brushed which is attractive without causing too many specular reflections. The curvature of the display and crystal takes getting used to and is a nice demonstration of the new capabilites of e-ink. (A curved LCD is darn near impossible.) Overall, it’s a striking, but not flashy watch. I quite enjoy wearing it.

The P-0302 is larger than the 0201, as you can see from the comparison picture. It’s 12-15mm longer, with a shape closer to a bracelet than a watch. On the contrast-stitched leather band, the larger case makes an attention getter with its striking face of displayed calendar.

(I apologize for the pictures; the extraordinary curvature makes reflections unavoidable.) The 0302′s modes are simpler and different from the 0201 — the larger 0302 is oriented around the calendar display of the month, with the current day underlined and the days of the week at the top of the display. Beneath that are two horizontal areas used to display hours (larger) and minutes (smaller, opposite color). You can also have it just display the date in large digits, which is clever but kind of useless for timekeeping.

The style of the 0302 is a bit dressier too, with screwed lugs, dual round buttons on the right side, and wider bezels. The longer case shows off the curved display even more than the 0201 which looks really cool if you’re a tech-watch fan like I am.
The 24mm leather strap is high-quality, with finely spaced holes, thorn buckle, and dark orange stitches. On my wrist, the 0302 wraps more (as seen), but remains comfortable. Surprisingly, the 0302 lacks the alarm function of the 0201. Another odd design choice is the calendar — it simply starts in the upper left, day 1 first, so there’s no visual indication of the day of the week. Since this differs from how a calendar is usually printed, its something you’ll have to relearn.

All e-ink watches lack illumination, and are therefore not readable in the dark. Since the e-ink displays are opaque, Phosphor will have to use front lighting, which is a bit more of an engineering challenge. Similarly, sub-display solar panels won’t work either, so don’t expect to see solar-powered e-ink soon. (Bezel or rehaut panels might work if the power consumption numbers add up.)

I was expecting to prefer the 0302, but after wearing them a couple of weeks, the 0201 has won me over. The display of time, in either stark numeric minimalism or hour disc, is readable at a glance, and elevates this watch to usable instead of mere novelty. The difference in size is notable but not a big factor in wear comfort, so if perhaps your job requires you to be more aware of the day and date, you’d like the 0302 better. The price difference is negligible; list prices for these two are $175 and $195 for the 0201 and 0302 respectively. Either one makes a nice conversation piece, as the curved e-ink display is eye-catching and new. I’m impressed with the design and execution on these, and look forward to seeing what else Phosphor can do with the new capabilities e-ink brings to timekeeping display.

In the illustrious and glamorous world of watch reviews there are few things that motivate us at Watch Report like a good deal. Very few people buy products based solely on the price so most of us will choose the product with the best value because it is value that justifies a price. Justification for the price tag is paramount when it comes to watch shopping because watches are one of the few items that inhabit a price range between $5 and $1 million dollars and still share the same basic purpose. So what are we all paying for when we buy watches? Exclusivity? Quality? Or worse, brand? Lets take a look at a new model in the ever-growing market of indie watch manufacturers; the Holotype from Canada based Halios Watches.

• Solid stainless steel bracelet with screwed links.
• Push button clasp with dive extension and flip lock.
• Limited to 300 units.
• Comes with rubber strap, tools, and travel case.

The Holotype is the first offering from Vancouver, Canada based Halios watches. Available in a total run of 300 units spanning three finishes and two dial colors this tool diver is shooting for serious value. I am happy to see more grass roots watch development, especially from my side of the 49th parallel. Halios is a dive watch company that is striving to build a loyal following with a compelling and original product backed by personal support. Selling the watches directly through their website and promoting the brand on forums with a pre-order helped Halios hit the market with buyers in tow. These small production companies exist (in part) on pre-orders of limited edition models that are generally scooped up by collectors; the collectors get exclusivity and a good deal while becoming part of a new business model in watch making. Halios is definitely not alone with brands like Boschette, Ocean7, Scorpion, Prometheus, and Benarus, all using pre-orders in online forums like watchuseek.com to bring their watches to the most loyal and ardent watch fans. The Holotype was marketed the same way Halios was able to stay in contact with those who had ordered during the manufacturing process, providing information and personal attention you likely wouldn’t receive from larger brands. Let’s take a look at what they created:

The Holotype is 300m dive watch that is simple and precise in design and application. The stainless steel build is free of any play or wiggle; it quite literally feels like a solid piece. A prominent bezel, almost sterile dial, and large hands make the Holotype look like a military spec diver. At 16mm thick, the Holotype sits high, but not in a way that inhibits use, movement, or your ability to wear a sleeve over it. The crystal is thick and made of highly scratch resistant sapphire, and it fits perfectly into the case, showing off the depth of the dial in true diver fashion. The PVD coating on this watch is first rate matching the quality seen on the Ocean7 LM-2GMT (which is a far more expensive watch). The PVD is matte in finish so marks and fingerprints wipe away easily. After wearing the watch for a couple weeks, I can attest that it is extremely scratch resistant, having bashed it on a few hard surfaces in my travels.

The Miyota 8215 automatic movement is operated via a very smooth and effective signed screw down crown located at 4 o’clock on the Holotype’s case. It has three set points for hand winding, quick date, and setting the time. The movement is hand-windable but non-hacking, and seems to keep time within 20 seconds per day — a figure that should improve as the movement breaks in. The Holotype does not suffer from “wrist spin” (where you can feel the movement spinning and winding as you move your wrist) like so many other Miyota powered watches seem to. I suppose it is the thickness of the case that insulates the movement.

The luminosity of the dial is great; large hands and markers ensure plenty of room for luminous paint, and I seldom found myself wishing the Holotype glowed more brightly. The 12 o’clock arrow on the bezel is also painted and glows like a torch, a nice feature for timing events in less than ideal light. Esthetically, the yellow dial is so much better then I had guesed it would be. I usually stick to black dials on most of my watches, but I thought I would give the yellow dial a try and I am very glad I did. It is bright and seems to be a semi gloss that reflects just enough light that it stands out from the PVD case.

The bracelet matches the case in every way. It is thick, solid, quiet, smooth, and didn’t pull a single hair from my wrist. All of the links are screwed together so sizing the bracelet is simple. A quick word of warning: the screws do not seem especially tight from the factory so I recommend sizing he bracelet then tightening each link completely (my failure to do so cost me a tiny screw). You might even consider a little Loctite 242 (blue). The fold over clasp has a push button release, and has a very secure fliplock. The end links are solid and secured by 24mm screws.

The packaging on the Holotype is far more then one would expect. My unit shipped in at tan colored faux leather travel case that houses the watch, warranty card, manual, tools, rubber strap, and polishing cloth. Halios includes more than most watches come with and the case is something you can actually use for travel and storage. The inclusion of tools is a nice gesture as a micro screwdriver is needed to size the bracelet, and the reverse side of the screwdriver is a spring bar tool that can be used with any watch for changing straps.

The Halios Holotype has been a joy to wear. It is everything I like in a watch without many of the pitfalls of modern start-up brands. The movement is cheap, but will keep time for many years; if it were to need repair, that too will be inexpensive compared to its Swiss counterparts. The build quality is excellent and would easily stand with anything in the highly competitive sub $1,000 range. It’s limited in production: only 300 units means that you get exclusivity without snobbery, which is a huge plus when watch shopping. Lastly, the price is very reasonable; the PVD models are sold out but the remaining stainless models are selling for $325. That’s good value for an automatic, limited edition, 300m diver built like the Holotype. I have only been in contact with Halios for a short time, but its clear you are getting considerable support as well. After the pro-orders shipped, the owner of Halios actually wrote all the buyers to “check in” on the new Holotypes and recommend tightening the screws. I feel like you wouldn’t get the same support from a sub $1,000 purchase of a brand name watch, even more so directly from the manufacturer.

If you are hunting for a new dive watch I can’t think of a watch I would recommend over the Holotype for quality, exclusivity, price and support. I have to thank Halios for providing us with the review model and honestly say that I have found a new “daily wearer”.

There are watches designed for activities (Rolex Sea-Dweller, Omega X-33), and there are watches designed to be reminiscent of activities (Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso, any dive watch with diamonds on it). When I cook, I want readability and lots of loud alarms, which is why I think that this is more the second than the first. While it’ll do just fine as a watch worn for cooking, the analog alarm and lack of countdown timer are kind of limiting. However, as a watch worn to remind you of a favorite avocation, it excels like nothing I could have imagined. Really. Let’s go over some of the design cues, because they’re not at all obvious to the casual observer.

1. Note the lug attachment to the case above – the case section is designed to look like the riveted handle of a pan (e.g  Calphalon).
2. ‘Culinary’ logo etched in the side of the case above.
3. Circular graining stamped on the dial, as in a fine saucepan.
4. The buttons and crown are shaped like the knobs of a gas range.
5. The flared bezel and domed crystal look like a metal & glass lid.
6. The ‘crowning touch’ (pun mine) is the unique arched and riveted crown guard, also intended to resemble a pan’s handle.

Let’s detour and talk features for a bit. The ISA quartz movement isn’t one I’ve seen used before, and has some very nice features. The 12-hour alarm is semi-useful as most of us prefer a daily alert, but its analog hand is quick to set and read. The second time zone feature is potentially quite useful, and since its analog you can set it to any offset you want, which is nice for New Delhi, Auckland, and such. I did find one design oddity: the GMT hand looks to me like a normal second hand, so I kept expecting it to sweep. On the other hand, it’s easily read at a glance and lumed to boot, so if you need another timezone or travel frequently, that’s a win. The battery gauge feature is an enormous win, and I hope that other quartz movements copy it immediately.

The watch wears quite comfortably. 42mm is a moderate size, and the low profile, angled lugs, and domed shape combine to slip easily under cuffs. The brushed finish on case and bracelet is attractive and unobtrusive, though as your eye nears the dial, the amount of reflective elements increases (bezel, hands, indices).The overall effect is quite attractive, and I must say that the Culinary garnered compliments from co-workers who don’t usually notice my coterie of watches.

Although initially skeptical, I’ve become a fan of the design. The culinary design cues are subtle enough to not shout “I’m a chef!” yet are still a reminder of an avocation or profession. It’s very functional, eminently readable at a glance, and stylistically versatile enough for almost any setting. Thematic watches often suffer in functionality, but here they’ve managed to avoid that trap. For example, the buttons and crown are shaped like gas knobs, but that doesn’t make them uncomfortable, slippery, or hard to use.

I think this watch would be an excellent gift for the burgeoning chef, and would serve well as the ‘only watch’ for those who aren’t into watches, but love cooking. The stainless/sapphire combination will take a lot of wear and abuse with excellent durability, and the battery gauge lets you avoid the unexpected-dead-watch problem. Overall, it’s unique, practical and surprisingly attractive.

List prices range are $350 for leather/stainless, $595 for 24k gold plate and $365 for the bracelet version reviewed. I consider this to be a very good value.

One watch brand that needs no introduction on Watch Report is Swatch. Their PR just contacted us to let us know that their new lineup for Fall/Winter is online at their store. Pictured at right is a chronograph that caught my eye as a nice design.

As always, Swatches are very inexpensive and most often quartz movements and mineral or plastic crystals. The new line has over 100 watches; there’s probably something there to catch your eye, and for $100 to $175 or so, why not? Not every watch needs to be an heirloom, after all.

We’re typically focused on men’s watches, but of course there’s quite a few women’s models here as well. There’s a lot to like about inexpensive, well-made watches that keep time well, are durable, and have an enormous style palette available. Swatch has both avant-garde as well as traditional designs, which is something unique to the brand.

The full lineup has some compelling choices. The green on black is novel, but the blue dial really has my number. All have a black rubber strap, and all look pretty darn awesome in my opinion.

Here’s a picture showing the tritium illumination. The tubes on the left are meant, I assume, to show how the material is vitrified into glass tubes. (There’s more information and links about the technology on this review of the Luminox.)

The movement is a Sellita SW200, which is an interesting story in its own right. The ETA 2824 and 2892, as used in zillions of watches, are now becoming subject to sales restrictions by the parent conglomerate which has caused supply problems at independent brands like Christopher Ward. However, the designs are from the 1960s and therefore no longer copyrighted; Sellita and others can now sell exact copies to whomever wants them. Sorted, as they might say. It should be just as reliable and repairable as an ETA-branded 2824.

These are pre-announced; according to PR, the first 150 come out between mid-September and October, followed by general availability. If you pre-order, you can reserve your choice of serial number.

As is often the case with Christopher Ward, the price represents an excellent value indeed, and we hope to get one for review.

Pictured here is the movement, a Miyota (Citizen) 8245. Hailing from the 8200 series introduced in 1977, it beats at 21,600vph (3Hz), has 21 jewels and a power reserve of 40 hours. It handwinds but does not hack, and Praesto has chosen an upgraded version that’s lightly decorated. I’ve only seen the base-finished 8200 series before, even in the thousand-dollar Autozilla, so this is an unexpected nicety in an inexpensive watch. Furthermore, Praesto adjusts and times every movement, yielding accuracy of 10-15 seconds per day. This is virtually unheard of in watches under two to three thousand dollars, and I heartily commend Praesto on their initiative here.

The initial production run will be 100 watches in the three different styles: Blue, black/grey and and black/grey with PVD case. Alas, the blue dial is only available with stainless, as my personal preference would be that deep blue combined with PVD.

The design of the dial is an interesting and visually appealing update on the WWII-era Flieger. Large, stencil minutes, with an inner ring of sans-serif hours, combined with skeletonized hands and a propellor-style bicolor seconds dial at 4:45. It combines well into an attractive and reasonably unobtrusive whole when combined with the understated, clean lines of the case and lugs.

The first run will be leather straps, though I’d expect bracelets to be an option sometime in the future. Just a guess.

The value proposition on these looks unusually good, and the look is both new and compelling. I suspect their initial run may well sell out rather quickly.
